Let?s get down to brass tacks. What is this ?trading? thing and how does it work? Again, we are no experts, but this is what we found out: trading works based on the auction principle, i.e. something will sell for the highest amount someone will pay for it, and someone will buy for as little as they can. In the trading floor (or the virtual exchange) potential buyers offer as much as they are willing to pay and potential sellers ask for the price they want to sell at. If there is a match, a sale will take place. If someone is very eager to buy or sell, they will do so ?at market?, meaning they will accept any price.

In the US anyone can buy stock as an investment, but you cannot just walk up to the stock exchange and order six of this and half a dozen of the other ? you must place your order through a professional broker. Party Poker (or rather its parent company, Party Gaming) is traded in the London Stock Exchange (LSE) as PRTY since June 2005. Party Poker’s shares rose 11% on the first day of trading, and after its large and successful IPO (initial public offering) it was reported by The Guardian as “worth more than some of the oldest and most famous names in British business, notably Sainsbury’s, EMI, Rolls-Royce, British Airways, ICI and ITV.”

This is not surprising if you consider that Party Poker has on several occasions accounted for more than half of the world poker market , and that its estimated profit for 2008 – even after the withdrawal of US customers – is upwards of 29.6 million pounds (around $60 million), with a total revenue of 235.52 million pounds (around $500 million.) The estimated profit for next year is even more ambitious, as the analysts expect revenue to reach 291.27 million pounds (about $600 million) in 2009.

The Ladbrokes group was formerly known as the Hilton Group (of hotel fame), which traded in the LSE with the symbol HG.L, but in 2006 it disposed of the hotels division to focus on gaming, and it now trades as LAD.L. The price of LAD.L as we write this is £3.07 (about $6.50.)

- WPT Enterprises produces and televises the World Poker Tour, a very popular series of televised high stakes tournaments which generate most of the WPTE’s revenue, and since 2005 they also have an online poker website, which is not accessible to US residents. WPT stock is traded in Nasdaq as WPTE, and it is currently priced at $1.16.

How did I win over $30,000.00 playing poker online part time in about 2 years? It really was quite easy once I figured out how to do it. First I must say that I was not a beginner when I began playing online. I have spent way too much time at a real poker table in my life and I do know the ropes. But the online game was different than the live game and it took me a while to figure out the best strategy.

No limit was also new. I had never played no-limit until the poker boom hit for no other reason that there weren’t any no-limit games. Suddenly though, everyone was playing no-limit and I thought I would give it a try as well. I did not win right away. It took me a while to figure out this very different game than limit Texas-Holdem.

In poker you need patience. Without it you will never win. I finally realized that in no-limit you need to try to make the nuts (the best possible hand) and hope the other player gives you most or all of his chips. I generally played only the best starting hands but I did try to limp in with a weaker hand if it was cheap. In no-limit, the bad player will eventually lose almost every time and all you had to have was tons of patience. However, that was not what made me the most money. It was playing for the bonuses. In that 2 years I did not play one hand of online poker that did not count toward a bonus. Never.

I had accounts at over 30 online poker rooms and went from clearing one bonus to the next bonus. I started playing one table and then when I got better went to 2, 3, 4, and sometimes 5 at the same time. I made the most playing 3 games of 50 cent/$1.00 no limit and at one time I had it calculated that I was making between $25.00 and $30.00 per hour. In my pajamas! Pretty effortlessly. The bonuses were easy enough to clear (because I only played the better ones) and when you threw in the fact that I won most of the time as well, that made me a consistent winner.
